Welcome to my blog and the journey into a new creative space.
2 years ago I moved to Bendigo, Victoria- a large regional city, from a teeny, tiny rural town- Mansfield.
In Mansfield I had a large creative network of friends, a buzzing arts studio practise where I taught adults and children painting, drawing, mosaics and a range of crafting skills, and made my own work for exhibition and sale. It is a small country town, with a strip of shops in the main street, and a proactive arts community, where I thought we would live forever.
Long story short, we had many reasons that meant a move to Bendigo had to happen.
It was a big deal for me, saying goodbye to my network, my studio and all that made me happy there.
Bendigo felt like New York city!! There are traffic lights, trams, busy roads and way too many shops to get my head around. It took me a while to be comfortable with the demographic changes, now there is so much to see and do and to discover I'm really excited!
But we had also bought a home with a bare backyard, twice the size of our previous block of land, and there was no studio space!
So for the past 2 years we have slowly marked out the space and firstly created raised vegie garden systems, espaliered fruit trees and planted out berry gardens, as gardening is my other love. Finally it was time to mark out the shed space, which had to include an office space, my studio, a small kitchen and a games room for my partners collectables. Many months went by deciding on the building material, getting quotes, discovering it would cost a small fortune, changing plans, chatting to builders........ and on it went.
But we finalised it all, and a year ago the dirt was turned ready to build. Then there was the mammoth task of insulating, lining, installing power and floor covering.
2 weeks ago my space was declared finished and I'm moving in!!!!!!! See huge happy face here.
So I have set up the space to focus on my favourite arty pursuits- clay, paint, textiles, crochet- and I will be creating all the ideas I have put into my visual diary over the past 2 years soon. We are still bringing boxes covered with 2 years of dust out of storage, and setting up will take a few more weeks, but my heart is singing seeing my loved possessions coming into the light again.
My creative space at Mansfield was called 'The Studio', and was furnished as a teaching space as priority. Here the room is all my mine, and it will have a different feel- the space and this website will be about what is designed and made there. So a slightly new name- 'The Studio- handmade' - to embrace all that evolves there.
Have a look at the slideshow to see the story of our backyard building progress- seeing 18 months of work in quick image succession makes the process looks so easy!
I will be creating a regular blog diary of how The Studio develops from here.
Prior to this move, for 4 years, I blog'ed my study and clay journey whilst at LaTrobe University at http://www.lyncoleceramics.com please visit there for stories about my fun with clay, and the road to where we are now.
I am a certified creative addict- having played with arty methods constantly since childhood. Now I work mostly in clay, painting and textiles - always designing and making new objects.
